My Commitment To You

To our referring veterinarians, my commitment is to provide skilled, thoughtful surgical care and to be a collaborative partner in supporting your patients and clients. I value open communication and shared decision-making to help ensure continuity of care from diagnosis through recovery.

To my clients, my commitment is to treat your pet with the same care and attention I would give my own, and to make sure you feel informed, supported, and respected throughout your pet’s surgical journey.

BIO

Doug has been in private small animal surgical referral practice since becoming Board Certified in 1997. His objectives have always been to provide an excellent surgical experience for each patient, and to ensure that every family is an informed partner in the management of their pet’s health. These many years spent with patients and their families has continuously reinforced his amazement with the recuperative powers of the body and the incredible bond between humans and their animal family members.

He graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990 and was awarded the GG Graham Prize, an honor given to each class’ outstanding student in small animal medicine and surgery. His one-year internship following graduation was completed at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Doug was then selected as one of two inaugural Fellows in the Comparative Cardiovascular Program at Texas A&M University where he completed a three-year residency in small animal surgery and four years of graduate work in cardiovascular physiology.

After achieving Board Certification, he established the surgery service at VetCare Emergency and Specialty Care Center when it opened in 1997 in Dublin, CA. He then founded Bay Area Veterinary Specialists in 1998, a large multidisciplinary specialty and emergency hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area where he not only performed surgery, but served as its Medical Director and Supervising Partner from inception through 2009. He left the Bay Area in 2011 and moved to Bozeman where he worked as staff surgeon at Gallatin Veterinary Hospital.

In 2012, he was recruited to start the surgery service at Veterinary Emergency and Referral Center of Hawaii, the state’s first 24-hour specialty and emergency hospital. After 17 months on Oahu, he moved to Arizona performing surgery at Veterinary Specialty Center of Tucson, an-other multidisciplinary 24-hour hospital. During this time, he also provided locum surgery services in Bozeman, Anchorage and Honolulu. In the summer of 2018, he moved back to Bozeman and focused his professional efforts at Veterinary Specialists of Alaska. Life changed again in 2020 and he joined the staff at Veterinary Surgical Specialists in Spokane where he worked until February 2022. Prior to joining Boundary Bay Veterinary Specialty Hospital, he provided locum services in Honolulu, Alaska and Montana.

When not working, Doug can be found on the water chasing fish with a fly rod, ac-companied by his beautiful and equally obsessed fiancé and their chocolate lab.
